Con su muerte, Barrios se convirtió en una leyenda, su memoria aún persiste en el pueblo salvadoreño, ya que su fecha de ejecución ha sido declarada Día de Conmemoración Nacional, por medio de decretos legislativos de 1952 y 1981, y conmemorada con actos cívicos, tanto en la plaza del centro de San Salvador que lleva su nombre como en su tumba en el Cementerio de los Ilustres de San Salvador.

Para honrar su memoria, la población de Cacahuatique cambió su nombre a Ciudad Barrios el 21 de abril de 1913;y la población de San Gerardo, al norte de San Miguel, fue bautizada en su honor.
